MDU Resources Subsidiary Plans to Construct Bakken Natural Gas Transportation Project

BISMARCK, N.D. — Jan. 25, 2019— MDU Resources Group, Inc. (NYSE: MDU) announced today that subsidiary WBI Energy, Inc. plans to construct approximately 67 miles of new pipeline, compression and ancillary facilities to transport natural gas from core Bakken production areas in western North Dakota to an interconnection point with Northern Border Pipeline. This North Bakken Expansion Project, as designed, would provide 200 million cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity.

Dependent on regulatory and environmental permitting and finalization of transportation agreements with customers, construction on the project is expected to begin in early 2021 and be completed late that year.

WBI Energy held an open season, soliciting customer interest in capacity on the North Bakken Expansion Project, that resulted in long-term transportation commitments from natural gas production, gathering and processing companies.

“We are excited to grow our pipeline system to meet the natural gas transportation needs in the Bakken region,” said Trevor J. Hastings, president and CEO of WBI Energy. “We are working with our customers to meet these needs as the industry focuses on reducing natural gas flaring while growing production volumes.”

The estimated cost to build the designed 20-inch diameter pipeline and two associated compressor facilities is $220 million. The project is expected to start near Tioga, North Dakota, and extend to a new connection with Northern Border Pipeline in McKenzie County, North Dakota.

WBI Energy plans to utilize the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s National Environmental Policy Act pre-filing process for the North Bakken Expansion Project and will begin that process by late in the first quarter of 2019. The final project design, route and cost will be based on customer demand and final agreements, as well as the engagement of other project stakeholders through the pre-filing process. If warranted by customer demand, the project could be expanded to provide transportation capacity of up to 375 million cubic feet per day.

WBI Energy Expanding Natural Gas Transportation Infrastructure in NW North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D.June 29, 2017 — MDU Resources Group, Inc. (NYSE: MDU) announced today that subsidiary WBI Energy, Inc. plans to expand its Line Section 27 natural gas transportation system in the Bakken producing area in northwestern North Dakota.

The $27 million to $30 million expansion project will involve construction of approximately 13 miles of 24-inch diameter pipeline and associated facilities. When the expansion is complete, the transportation capacity on WBI Energy’s Line Section 27 will be over 600,000 dekatherms per day. The targeted in-service date for the project is fall 2018, which is the same timeframe for completion as WBI Energy’s $55 million to $60 million Valley Expansion project near Fargo, North Dakota.

“The Line Section 27 Expansion is a good project, right in our backyard, that underscores the continued demand for reliable natural gas transportation service in the Bakken,” said David L. Goodin, president and CEO of MDU Resources. “This spring, we added significant new compression to our system in the Bakken and surpassed 1 billion cubic feet per day of subscribed firm capacity, systemwide, for the first time. With these new projects in the Bakken, our natural gas transportation volumes continue to grow, and will be further enhanced by our Valley Expansion project in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. We remain optimistic about the growth opportunities at WBI Energy.”

WBI Energy Moving Forward With Valley Expansion Project in Eastern ND, Western MN

BISMARCK, N.D. — Sept. 7, 2016 — WBI Energy, Inc., the pipeline and midstream subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc. (NYSE: MDU), announced today that it will move forward with construction of its Valley Expansion Pipeline Project in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota.

WBI Energy has secured the capacity commitments needed for the 38-mile, 16-inch natural gas pipeline that will connect WBI Energy’s existing system near Mapleton, North Dakota, with the
Viking Gas Transmission Company pipeline near Felton, Minnesota. Survey work has begun on the route and construction is expected to start in early 2018.

“This project was initiated because of customer interest in bringing more natural gas to growing eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota, and that interest certainly was supported during our open season,” said Martin Fritz, president and CEO of WBI Energy. “We have signed agreements now from customers and are excited to move forward with the pipeline that will enhance the security of our existing system and support growth in the Red River Valley.”

Cost of the expansion is estimated at $55 million to $60 million. The project, which is designed to transport 40 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, like the existing WBI Energy pipeline system. The company will work with FERC on permitting and regulatory requirements, which will include publicinformation meetings. Subject to approval by FERC, the Valley Expansion Project is expected to be complete and placed in service in 2018.
